Love in a Time of Monsters Golden Age of Monsters Volume 1 Teresa Yea 9781508742951 Books

The writing in this book is great. It flows quickly without rushing important events, and the prose is descriptive while leaving just enough details to the imagination. I never could properly visualize the monster, which just made it that much creepier to read at night.

The characters especially make the story. Each was unique and deeply flawed, with a diversity that was both disturbing and impressive. No one was whole and untroubled, and I felt drawn to their struggles and triumphs. And, equally enjoyable, no character made it through the novel unchanged. Everyone underwent some dramatic transformation and, by the end, no one could be defined as simply "good" or "bad."

Aside from the troubled characters, my favorite thing about this novel was that it broke all my expectations. The author did a great job setting up what looked like a fantasy or romance trope...then steering the story in a totally different direction. Nothing went as I expected, which was refreshing.

There were a few characters that felt inconsistent at times, and a few scenes that were more violent or disturbing than I felt was necessary. But overall, this struck me as not only an excellent story, but a new one, breaking cliches, avoiding the perfect hero/heroine tropes, and allowing the main characters to be damaged and grow through their struggles.

Love in a Time of Monsters Golden Age of Monsters Volume 1 Teresa Yea 9781508742951 Books Reviews

This review is from Love in a Time of Monsters (Golden Age of Monsters Book 1) ( Edition)
This book kept me up all night. The writing was beautiful and engaging, descriptive in all the right places without going overboard and plodding down the plot. The many twists and turns, betrayals and reversals, nail-biting suspense in both action and romance, had me glued to the page and staying up way past my bedtime, but it was so worth it. The very last chapter of this book brought the entire story full circle--connecting perfectly with the first chapter-- and was so bittersweet and heartbreaking that I re-read five times, discovering something new that I missed every time.

The characters came alive to me. Every single one, from major to minor, was dynamic and multi-dimensional and you watch them grow over the course of the story. There's Rob, invalid, intellect, idealist, underdog, who, over the course of the story, learns how to be a man. Cat, monster hunter, addict, battered inside and out... an unlikely and reluctant hero. Liam is one of my favorite characters; I didn't like him at the beginning and was surprised how much he grew on me throughout the story. While never traditionally good, Liam has his own code of honor and makes for an exceptional villain/anti-hero. I only wish we had more of him.

Mild-spoiler alert I wasn't so sure about the romance between Rob and Cat at first as I thought it happened too fast, but I came to appreciate it when I got to the final part. It's a love story between an idealist and a cynic. Rob falls for Cat too hard, too fast, while Cat, hardened by tragedy, pushes him away. Their romance is a constant tug-o'-war and nothing is tied up into a neat package even after the two get together... if anything, they experience more trouble after love is declared than before. I found the deviation from the traditional happily ever after very unique and refreshing.

There are lovely settings and a magical atmosphere. Dark and relentless moments of tragedy and terror. There are also comedic moments and some very quotable lines. I recommend this to anyone who likes multi-layered fantasies involve deception and intrigue or for those who love gothic horror stories with plenty of bone-chilling suspense and gothic atmosphere.
This is such a badass, adventurous, exciting & even sexy book. I was extremely fascinated and captivated by the characters and storyline.

Rob and Cat are an awesome duo (sort of Duo because Cat is really leading the show!) as they encounter monsters and make their way through amazing settings. Castles and forests and Scotland--come on! I was so immersed in this story that I felt like I was following behind them. Teresa's writing is dark, gorgeous and layered--you won't regret taking this journey!

The one flaw you'll probably find with this book is that it doesn't have a movie deal---yet. )
Make sure you have a couple hours free before you start reading because this is one of those books that is impossible to put down. From the first page, the author really sucks you in. Her writing is crisp and clean, the settings are gorgeously detailed, and the characters are all a mixture of good and bad qualities that make them feel like real people. Because of this, the romance in this book feels genuine, and is probably one of my favorite love stories in a long time.

There are also some truly terrifying moments in this book. The monsters are really well-written and as the title suggests, they are a big part of this story. Almost as terrifying is the woman who hunts them, Cat. She is like no other heroine I've read, and I really loved her as a character. Despite a deeply flawed personality, she has this surprising noble streak that makes you root for her regardless of what else she's done.

This is definitely a must-read book, perfect for a rainy day. I can't recommend it enough.
