Though Morgan Selwood was introduced in Supertech, it’s in this full-length book that we really come to know this fascinating blend of technology and humanity. I appreciate very much the subtlety with which Greta van der Rol reveals her character and her very fallible human nature. Just as Morgan herself does not, van der Rol doesn’t take the easy and cliched way out and give us a character who is little more than a machine with squishy bits. Morgan is complex, not just because she’s been enhanced by technology to the point where she can interface with dataports no matter how alien, but also because she’s dealt with discrimination and isolation through most of her life. She’s manipulated, used, regarded as a curiosity, highly sought after because of her skills, and expected to perform like a miracle worker. Through all this, she must deal with sorting out the truth contained in political machinations and rebellion, and with the developing relationship between her and Admiral Ravindra. Ravindra is a product of the highly structured caste-oriented society into which he was born, but despite his favored status is himself a rebel of sorts. Morgan knows nothing of such a rigidly divided society and they much each overcome their mistrust of the differences in their outlooks as they are thrown together in a battle against an alien force interested only in wiping out ‘primitive’ species.
As she always does, van der Rol creates a full-featured society rather than a painted backdrop against which her characters act out their lives. There is depth here that underscores the author’s grasp of the interweaving of history, sociology, the arts, religion, commerce, and politics. She does this with amazing skill, avoiding the slippery slope into relying upon flat one-dimensional archetypes, as well as the dive into point-making instead of storytelling. The story is foremost; the points are sketched lightly. We are left with a beautiful science fiction adventure with more than a dollop of romance. The balance between adventure and romance is nicely maintained throughout, and readers of multiple genres will find lots to to enjoy in this outstanding book.

Ms. van der Rol held my interest to the end with installment of the Morgan Selwood series. Her characters are complete and very like some people I know. She paints a picture with words using a delicate touch and does not leave her canvas dripping with useless information. Her writing is reminiscent of a combination of Anne McCaffrey and Lois McMaster Bujold. I never found myself flipping the pages to get to something more interesting.

This kind of space opera I totally enjoy. It is heavy on the suspense and flirtations of all sorts and has a light touch on the sex. I have read the entire series and strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a story to amuse and get lost in for a few hours.
Spock of s trek was a alien who looked like a human and was worth overlooking this simplistic idea. To me especially in 2014 an alien should be different in a basic and disturbing way. We are so much like other forms of earth life that because somewhere along the line we a share an ancestor. This story's aliens did share a human ancestor but still they are too much like the people we know. Even the artificial computer intelligence seemed all too human. The author is a good writer and is easy to read but why bother with a science fiction back drop if the book doesn't explore science or fiction. I want to stretch my imagination and think about new ideas, if I'm going on a space ship I don't want to travel light years just to find everything earthly.
This space opera has many of the traditional elements a hero(ine) who is somehow superpowered, survival against all odds, space battles with interesting tech, and some sorts of good and bad aliens. There is a heavy romantic element here, with somewhat detailed sex scenes, so this series is adults only. The writing is of good quality as is the editing. Overall it is very readable, but there were issues for me.

The biggest flaw is that the book attempts to do too many things at the same time. This book tries to be a space opera, a romance, an archaeological adventure, a societal commentary, and more. it does none of them well enough, so it becomes a mash up that fails to satisfy.
This author's Iron AdmiralConspiracy was a good read, an intelligent book written for people who want to immerse themselves in the characters. Morgan's Choice goes far beyond that book. The semi-human vs seems to be alien pairing is good, and the author doesn't sugar coat the Admiral's actions. The only thing I wonder is how Morgan felt about being manipulated as a child, before she would have the opportunity to decide for herself. I'm betting that has a lot to do with her actions in this book. The chase scenes kept me engrossed though I did NOT enjoy going through that mountain in the dark.
There is enough to contemplate with the colonization history without being lambasted by minutiae, and the scenes between Morgan and Artemis offer a unique suggestion on our future. What we are first presented as an unreasonable caste system becomes logical if not well thought out.
A wonderful read by an exciting new author.
Morgan Selwood, the same heroine from "Supertech" in a full length novel, takes on a couple of alien societies that are remarkably human with a few significant changes. This is a very human space opera with a decidedly feminine touch and lots of action including heroic scale relationships and battles. There is even a clash of classes to make the whole story interesting. A real page turner.

I was disappointed with the first story, Supertech, because it was a short story and I was expecting more. After reading Morgan's Choice I appreciate the introduction from Supertech. It all reminds me of Ender's Game that started out as a short story and ended (it has ended, hasn't it?) in a long string of novels.
