The Gift had started with an interesting and rather original premise of how other not even Humanoid civilizations might approach fist contact with Earth. I gave 2 stars only because of that golden nugget in the pile.

But this is the only interesting thing about this book. After those first few pages book becomes filled with white-hat and black-hat flat characters speaking righteous or devilish banalities in their dialogs.

But the actual SciFi component is the worst joke of all.
Author did not even hint definite limitations of the "gifts" capabilities and limitations from the beginning and it allows him to reveal any new capabilities, to set any new limitation and later to nix some limitations with new capabilities as he strolls along. Anything to twist the story. And those twists are not even interesting to begin with.

And the last thing about this book - the motivation to give "gifts" is to help our type of civilization based on individuals to resist possible future attacks form the evil group-think civilizations.

That goal is pursued by turning team of "good guys" into a group-think community of "good for entire humanity" group-think attitude. As story unfolds, their group-think helps them win battles against greedy individualistic evil guys.

The irony of the fact that it means that group-think already won when characters started to accept gifts to possibly fight group-think in the future is completely lost on Author.

Dave Donovan presents a relatively novel paradigm with The Gift. The elements have been around for a long time; however, the combination is unique for me. I was reminded of The Galaxy Primes by ee "Doc" smith, the Cyborgs "group mind" from Star Trek TNG, and the nanites from StarGate cable spin-offs.

Like some other reviewers have noted, I would have liked a little more character development, especially earlier details about the wounding of Sam Steele.

Mr. Donovan has set the stage for sequels which I would like to read. I also would like to see movies and/or mini-series based on The Gift. I would recommend the book to SciFi readers.
This book made me think! I enjoyed peeling the layers apart to get at the heart of the theme this book is wrapped around.

Science fiction is an acquired taste for some people, and it's not my favorite type of book to read most of the time, but I really enjoyed reading "The Gift" for many reasons. Not only was it a unique perspective that was refreshing to absorb, it was also one of those books that I sat down with, thinking I might read a couple chapters and then go do some work, come back read a few more, and go do some more work. Instead I ended up gobbling the whole thing up in one sitting (I did get up for a refill on my coffee). It was compelling to read, my curiosity was ignited and I had to know what was coming up next. While there were some terms that I was unfamiliar with at the start, I became comfortable with them through the reading because they were presented in a way that allowed me to understand their importance. By the time I was into the third chapter there was no going back, I was on a journey and enjoying it!

There were characters that made me want to know more about them, not just Sam and Web, but many of the other characters whose lives we only get a glimpse of. There were places that felt both familiar and forbidden that were included in the escapades of Sam and his team, while Web attempted to locate them. Two leaders who were once on the same team, were fighting in opposite directions... perhaps they always had. I can relate to that type of relationship between two people, can you?

We still don't know where the "gifts" come from, or if their help is safe to accept, but the curiosity has been aroused in this reader... maybe Donovan will let us know in his next book!
Interesting premise and possibilities. Two types of civilizations one individualist the other hive collectivist. The Collectivist like our marxists want to destroy the individualist civilizations and so gift ships are sent out by and indi civilization before being destroyed to warn, prepare and lead other indi civs to secret repositories to survive.

The gifts create symbiotic human/computer AIs to work with the human within the human's mind. I kept wondering if this was a trick of the hive mind to create new hives from indi civs. Any way after reading the story the ending was rather lame. No big cosmic war or confrontation. So that's why I gave it a three.
