Frustratingly, I felt there was a much better novel inside this one trying to get out. Some great ideas, the whole modern ice age, people evolved to hibernate through the winter, the protagonist one of the few to remain awake and battling to unravel a great mystery. Unfortunately the mystery was not that great as it became apparent about half way through what the main twist was going to be. Also the whimsical tone, with it's references to Tunnocks Tea Cakes etc., which worked so well in the Thursday Next novels does not work here. I found the change in tone between quite serious dramatic moments and whimsical musings the next to be jarring and spoiled the narrative flow. I found myself wishing the author has put their creative energy into a follow up to the excellent Shades of Grey instead of this.

Each time I open a Jasper Fforde book, comes to my mind that quote from John Brunner's "Total Eclipse"
"- What's it like in your head ?
"- Oh, imagine a haunted lunapark..."

The worlds of Jasper are always somewhat dystopian, but in an ever-changing, kaleidoscopic way. Like Scheckley, he starts with an improbable premise and then furthers the reasoning to the most extreme logical conclusion, trapping the reader in the divergence. It could be simply terrifying, even by inference (remember the Road to High Saffron in "Shades of Grey" ? Now that left me with nightmares - and his frozen, hostile and demented winter world here is about the same), but there is always that saving grace Jasper's characters always draw us to them, generate sympathy, even when they are ambiguous.

And when you (reluctantly) leave the book at the end, there remains the intimate knowledge of a small universe in which you know you would easily find your bearings. And that's some gift.

Thanks once more, Jasper. Great job.
Wow. Simply wow. Jasper Fforde has created a new timeline, a new evolution, in which the earth is cold, so people hibernate 4 months each year. It's a dramatic story, with a convulating plot.
Jasper Fforde never disappoints! Love his writing! Whenever he is in town doing a reading I go! Total entertainment!
I was happy to see a new book from Jasper Fforde. I found this one very different from his Thursday books. Much more straightforward, very well plotted, funny and overall immensely enjoyable.
From the staggering world building to the whimsy to the satisfying plot, this is Fforde at his best. As a fan of Shades of Grey, I enjoyed this totally new winter world, that was just as complex and fully realised as the chromatocracy. A vivid and engaging novel with plenty of plot twists.
Almost gave in and gave up. Persisted as characters settled into their roles and gained a certain familiarity. Their unpredictability was both intriguing and confusing as they were good turned bad then became good again. I can't say I really came to grips with Toccata/Aurora, but they were interesting. Charlie took a while to develop into a believable character for me but by the end, he was memorable. The concept of hibernation in a world turning to ice and snow for four months in the year is a tempting option for people like me who hate winter but can't afford to live in Tahiti or the Maldives. The author develops some creative ideas to make human hibernation more realistic but also shows up a few problems that would need to be solved as well as taking a look at the consequences ,as far as human nature is concerned, of switching off
I've waited for this book since 2014, so I'm thrilled it's finally here. And It didn't disappoint - with a fully realized alternate world, intriguing premise, and characters that jump right on in or out of your imagination. I did find myself becoming a bit confused between characters due to the fast pace and quick drop in and out of several people, but overall, Fforde seems back to form after a hiatus that hopefully proved fruitful. Now if only I could get a sequel to Shades of Grey...
